It was a busy day as usual for Michelle Obama yesterday (June 22).
In the morning, the American First Lady joined California’s Lirst Lady Maria Shriver in San Francisco as they spoke to students at Bret Harte Elementary School prior to helping them construct playground equipment.
“Kids have to be active,” said Michelle. “They have to move their bodies in order to get their minds flowing.”
After offering some inspiration and a helping hand, Mrs. O slipped out of her tennis shoes and into a pair of heels as she headed to the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service. Michelle was on hand to kick off President Barack Obama’s United We Serve campaign urging people to help the nation’s economic recovery through volunteering and public service.
“We’re starting to see some glimmers of light at the end” of the economic tunnel, said the First Lady. “But at the end of the day, there’s only so much we can do from Washington. Government can’t be everywhere and do everything — we need active, engaged citizens like all of you to step up.”
She added: “Even if you have just a few hours once in a while, or just an hour a week, you can make a difference. You don’t need any special skills or talents or experience — you just need to show up and do your part to help.”
