Check out a new photo of Madonna’s newly adopted daughter, Mercy James.
While a friend of the 50-year-old pop star says she’s “ecstatic” after winning her battle to adopt the young Malawian toddler, Mercy’s alleged deadbeat dad says he did not expect the star to get his daughter.
“I did not expect this outcome. I did not think the court would rule in this way,” says James Kambewa. “Right now I do not know what to do so I’m keeping quiet. I will have to sit down with my people and strategize on the way forward but right now I have not decided on my next course of action.”
He adds: “My last word is that if my efforts fail I wish my daughter the best of luck and it is my prayer she would be well looked after.”
Madge is expected to take custody of Miss Mercy later today or tomorrow.

Hell, I’m an out of work American, Madonna adopt me dammit. Why do these celebs only want kids from foreign countries? There are plenty of orphaned children in the USA.
The so-called father never even went to see her at the orphanage so what claim does he have exactly? He’s probably trying to find a way to make some money. There is no guarantee he is even the father. I wish this beautiful little girl every happiness with her new family. As much as I dislike Madonna, she has done a good thing here.
cartman, no-one in the West will ever suffer as much as a poor child in Africa. That’s why she adopts there. It isn’t rocket science.
You do have to wonder why the father didn’t get his daughter before now. Just leaving her in an orphanage until suddenly Madonna wanted to adopt her.
He has never seen her, but now, just like David father, he get’s money for bragging about how the adoption was against his wishes.
Madonna did good here, this little girl suddenly has a bright future ahead.

Anon a scares me anywho, I wish this little girl all the happiness too. Whether madonna is doing this for press or because she really wants to make a difference in this childs life, in the end it doesn’t matter this child will now be ok because of madonna.
cartman - the reason most adopt internationally is due to the fact that many in this country who need homes are not babies (i.e. under the age of three). Most are children that have been in the system because they have either been abused or neglected. Most are older and behaviorally challenged. They are not easy to place in homes for adoption because they have high needs. I have friends who work with these type of kids as youth specialists. I can tell you that adopting a child like this brings so much with it that few people are equipped to handle it. It’s sad, but that’s how it is. Most that adopt from other countries do so to get babies under the age of 3. Babies are less likely to come already scarred from previous experiences–although some do.

Why do people always feel the need to comment about celebs adopting internationally? There are only three celebs, AJ, Madonna, and Mary Louise Parker, who have adopted children from Africa. The vast majority of celebs have adopted American children, so can we please put that canard to rest. As for the father, if he was interested in being a father it should have been when the child needed a home and not when the child found a home.
It’s such a messy situation. The father has been sucked in by the media and I don’t think he ever was capable of looking after his daughter. If Madonna hadn’t wanted to adopt her, he would have just left her in the orphanage and never spoken out about it. Madonna on the other hand should not be given custody of this child. She needs to learn to go through adoption like everyone else and not just get a child because she wants it. It’s kind of disgusting. I’m sure this child will live a much better life with Madonna than if she was in an orphanage, but if Madonna was not a celebrity she would not have won this case. A freshly divorced woman with a teenage boyfriend is definately not an ideal candidate for adoption.
