The International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, released this photo of Angelina Jolie, who attended the trial today (May 19) of a Congolese warlord charged with using child soldiers.
The 33-year-old actress says in a statement released by the court Tuesday that the case against Thomas Lubanga is a “landmark trial for children.” Lubanga, founder and former leader of the Union of Congolese Patriots political movement, has pleaded innocent to charges of recruiting and using child soldiers in tribal conflicts.
The United Nations estimates up to 250 000 child soldiers still fight in more than a dozen countries.

I know she will be “worshipped” for this; personally I don’t know why she’s nothing amazing. The people that brought him to trial and the children who have survived this horrible ordeal are amazing. Angelina showing up and making a statement is not.

Angelina has never tried to pretend that she doesn’t use her popularity to bring attention to her causes. That’s the whole point! If her attending this meeting means that a few hundred more people know about the use of child soldiers then she’s done an awesome thing. She looks completely beautiful here by the way…I think the fact that she is intelligent and compassionate only adds to her appeal. How can anyone hate her for that?
Her intentions may be good, but her judgment is poor.
According to the news story: The International Criminal Court was forced to look at new ways to shield child soldier witnesses from their alleged oppressors after the first witness against Lubanga changed his testimony.
This is an extremely stressful time for the kids, and I think her presence is a distraction for the folks at court, who should be focusing on the witness situation.
