As we all scratch out heads trying to figure out just what was behind Britney Spears’ lackluster performance at last night’s big MTV Video Music Awards, a few theories have arisen.
Here are just a couple.
First from a fan site:
Britney Spears was to perform under the magic of Chris Angel… but MTV freaked out at the last minute finding out what Britney was actually going to do.Supposidly [SIC], what Britney and Chris were planning was to do a set of mirrors and flotation. But when told to the Palms Hotel/Casino… the hotel flipped.Insurance was the main problem, and the stage couldn’t support the performance. MTV also freaked at the last minute because of their fear of being “too controversial” during the performance. Britney and Chris were infact furious with MTV’s sad excuse and told Britney to change the performance at the last minute.
Britney’s original performance was to infact appear and disappear. To float through the air… and for much mature dancing.
Sounds reasonable. There certainly weren’t any magic mirrors or disappearing acts going on — aside from Brit’s career, that is.
Anyway, another theory comes from Britney-adoring photo agency X17. They have a much more dramatic reason for Brit’s disappointing comeback.
A source tells X17 Brit found out about Sarah Silverman’s crappy line about Britney’s babies just moments before she took the stage to perform “Gimme More.” Needless to say, Britney was PISSED! … as any mom would be. Britney was so upset she walked through her performance just to get it over with (despite encouragement from her friends, including Sam who was apparently yelling at Sarah backstage) to skip out on it all together). She held up her end of the bargain and got a major slap in the face from Sarah.
Whatever the case may be, there is definitely one person in this world who didn’t think Britney’s performance was a firey mess — and it’s none other than Britney herself.
An hour after opening the VMAs, Britney, who was then dressed in a white T-shirt and white fedora, was asked by USA Today’s William Keck how she felt her performance went.
“Good, thank you,†she replied.

Well one positive thing about her is that her fans are dedicated and just as bat shit as she is to come up with all of these lame ass excuses. She needs to concentrate on getting well and taking care of those babies. She can go off to Vegas when they hit school age and do a lounge show.
Whatever the excuse, the performance was GARBAGE. Kanye was annoyed that they even asked Britney to do it and I agree. They should have had someone more dependable slated to perform. Everyone know’s Kanye is ALWAYS ready to put on a show, they should have just let him do it if they supposedly had a problem with whatever she was planning.

After years of being away from the stage, she should NOT have been trying to do magic tricks - just perform and sing the fucking song — a REAL professional and adult can do that and pull it off like a pro. The performance was horrible, I expected so much more from Britney. Whether she was set up, had to change her routine at the last minute, whatever.. Britney has always been an amazing performer and THAT was far from amazing.
Am I the only one who thinks she looks completely wasted? She can barely stand on her own! This was her chance for a great comeback and she blew it.

I don’t give a damned if both shoes broke in mid-stride. A TRUE performer does the best they can DESPITE the situation (hell, Patti Labelle is famous for kicking off her shoes during a performance if they hold her back). The only thing weaker than Shitney spears is all of the losers trying to make excuse for what was clearly a performance unjustafiably CRAP.

I just watched her performance and I can’t believe they let her get on TV and perform like that. She just walked thru it like it was not even a concern to her. WTH was she thinking? That pic at the top is more than halfway thru the performace and both of her heels look OK to me. That is just a lie to make up for the fact that she could barely stand on her own. It was horrible and there is no other word for it. The lip synching thing has run its course and everybody is SICK of it!! Grow some talent or go the hell away.

Worst awards show I have seen in 20 years…Brit was so bad it’s almost unbearable to even think about it–and–to add insult to injury-she was FAT !!!: Sarah Silverman is not and never has been- funny; most of the music I heard on this show sucked. the only halfway decent performance period was Alicia Keys. And–sorry to say this- but for a while I thought maybe BET and bought out MTV. Been a long time since I’ve heard that much crappy rap shit in one place. I’ll never again take anything MTV does seriously—-they suck…..

MikeC - you are so right about the BET comment. There was one introduction where the interviewer said to this gang-banger looking hood “this performer needs no introduction” and then started interviewing him. I still am not sure who he was. It was a terrible show with sucky guests and performers, and in that light, I guess Brittney’s performance was right on track for the environment. IT SUCKED.
I really feel bad for Britney, if this is the case then I’m happy. Britney told MTV for Sarah not to make any jokes about her kids and they said yes but when Britney heard Sarah practicing in the back this is what I think really happened. She went out there and didn’t try to get back at MTV, was it the right thing…NO but that Sarah Silveman went to far talking about her kids like that and if anyone ever talked bad about my kids especially in the same place as me I would bitchslap them.
Oh, I forgot something in my above post….during one interview, Kanye West said that the release date of his and Fifty Cent’s cd’s was the “most monumental release date in history”. LOFL LOFL LOFL LOFL.

I find Sarah Silverman a much bigger failure than Britney! At least Britney’s career has been based on talent rather than paying out other people all the time. She’s honestly not even funny and what she said about Britney’s children is just unacceptable. To call someones children a mistake is just disgusting! And you could tell Paris wasn’t amused by Sarah’s lame excuse at comedy.
I think that there was a lot of things working against Britney for this performance. Obviously Criss had nothing to do with it and they must have had to change the routine at the last minute which is why it was kind of unpolished. And Britney actually did look kind of upset or something during her routine which was probably because of Sarah. Makes sense to me.
The VMA’s need to stay in NY. I went to the VMA’s here in Miami and it wasn’t the same. I felt like I was at a Diddy Party where only his friends came. This year was Timbaland’s. They need to make a point to SHOWCASE all genres so they cover all the bases on what is going on in Music. I can’t stand country but ya gotta show all that is going on in Music. Too bad about Brit. She should have started off with a different outfit. If MTV did backout on what she had planned she should have told them to beat it and had her publicist cover for her. She should have had the performance ok’d before she learned it period. Maybe Timbaland was pissed cause she dissed him and wanted her to suck since this was “the timbaland show.” The guy is so cocky. Chris Brown is seriously insanely talented, Alicia was great and that last show with Nelly F, Timberlake,land and that other girl was bad ass. I love timberland, think He’s insanely talented, and thought Alicia Key’s performance sucked ass. I couldn’t stand her vocals, and muting it didn’t help because she picked the WORST outfit she possibly could for her body shape. But I agree Chris Brown’s performance was really good, and i don’t even care for him. And Britney’s performance wasn’t the worst I’ve ever seen, but she certainly didn’t put forth too much effort, for WHATEVER reason.

First off, I don’t find Sarah Silverman funny at all. Sure, comedians diss people all the time but when your whole act is a series of cruel roasts with no jokes you shouldn’t be allowed to present awards shows. So SS gets a thumbs-down from me.
Britney is another matter entirely:
EVEN IF her heel broke, her act was changed, she was pissed at the network or upset at the comments over her children there is absolutely no excuse for how horrible that performance was.
- she’s been in the industry long enough to deal with any mishaps or last-minute changes; she also has a huge entourage who no doubt fixed everything
- she should know what SS is like and has ample opportunity to call her out on her incredibly insensitive remarks after the show
- her 3minute performance, and hers only, was the one that was vital for her career.
I don’t expect her to be an amazing singer or look as good as she did when she was 16; all would be forgiven with a decent performance. But bad lip-synching, lacklustre dancing and wearing far less clothes than she even did in the Slave4U days (remember when we thought THAT was controversial?)…I’m not buying any excuses. And I’m a Britney fan.

Everybody lip syncs at lame awards shows…including Beyonce and Shakira. Second, how could a commedian’s comments affect someone’s performance when the singer went on first? I expected her to be bad, after all it is Britney we are talking about here, and I remember all the fuss about her mini House of Blues tour earlier this year, but man she didn’t even try to make it good. Now that the expected has happened, maybe we can go on with our lives without a second rate attention whore in it.

Her music wouldn’t sound so good (when i say good, i mean comparable to her older stuff) and her performance be shit. I believe they changed it on her becasue certain parts where she was dancing on the upper platform…like actually dance moves was good.
